Myths and facts
The energy of the Carthaginian empire has become Tunisia's characteristics.
The water of Zaghouan used to feed the city of Carthage via a 50 kilometre- long aqueduct which remains are still strewn all along the road between Tunis and Zaghouan.

Flaubert's novel SalammbĂ´ quotes that this aqueduct had been attacked by mercenaries to make Carthage thirsty.

Today, the water of Zaghouan is still keeping all its qualities ( an exceptionally high calcium and magnesium content) and it is no more transported via the aqueduct but by EMT's trucks to serve rapidly the Tunisian consumer.

The water temple
The water temple ( Nymphée) was built by Hadrien around the year 130, it is a semicircular collecting basin with 12 recesses housing 12 deities ( Neptune and sea nymphs)

The city is very pleasant with its narrow and steep streets, its squares and fountains making the renown of Zaghouan.
